Hudson Passes Resolution for a Guaranteed Income

This January, the city of Hudson passed a resolution calling for a federal guaranteed income—a grand-scale version of the universal basic income idea that HudsonUP is based on—and ongoing federal payments throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mayor Kamal Johnson said of the resolution, “The pandemic has taken a massive toll on the already-stretched finances of our residents, particularly those of color. Providing a guaranteed income at the local level can help some, but we need action by our federal leaders to extend economic security to all.”

Mayor Johnson is a member of a diverse group of mayors from across the country, Mayors for Guaranteed Income (MGI), that advocates for people to receive guaranteed income in their communities. MGI is a coalition of 30 mayors dedicated to advancing direct, recurring cash payments to the poor and middle class. The organization was founded in June 2020 by former Stockton, California Mayor Michael Tubbs and advocates for cash-based guaranteed income policies at the federal level, as well as the local level.
